What to Do on a First Date

Dating, for single women, can be a bit harrowing. This is especially true for first dates for a single person. If you’re nervous about going out with a new person, the points below will help.

Decide to meet in a public place. It is best to meet for a coffee, drinks or a lunch first, rather than planning a whole movie and dinner thing. That way, if you feel that it isn’t going anywhere, you can cut it short with a polite thank you, rather than drawing the date out the whole evening. Plus, if you go for a movie, you’ll spend the majority of you time looking at the screen instead of getting to know each other. Dress well, but don’t show a lot of skin – it’s possible that you’ll send out the wrong kind of signals. If you decide to meet for drinks, stick to your limit.

Don’t get drunk – for obvious reasons. Listen to his conversation and find out whether your likes and interests match. However, don’t try to make them match. Be honest about who you are, you do not have to pretend to be something you’re not. If you do, it will come back to haunt you later. It is a first date, so don’t extend it for too long. When the check comes, offer to pay, or at least insist on splitting the tab. A lot of single men out there will appreciate it and it has the added bonus of not making you feel indebted. Even if you had a great time, do not make plans to meet again that very day. Go home and sleep over it before accepting a second date.

Finally, if you met this single person through a mutual friend, it’s pretty sure they’ll ask how it went. Be neutral. Don’t gush, and, even if it was a disaster, do not crib about it. You can be sure it’ll get back to your date.
